Oil Hits $111, CPI Expected to Spike to 3.4% This Week
Two major inflation readings land this week. Thursday brings Core PCE, expected at 0.4% for the third straight month, which annualizes to 4.8%, more than double the Fed’s target. Friday delivers March CPI, expected to jump from 2.4% to 3.4%, levels not seen since 2024. With crude oil surging from $60 to $111 per barrel in under a month, the real question is whether these numbers fully price in the oil shock.
Earnings are light at 47 companies. Delta Airlines on Wednesday is the one to watch as rising jet fuel costs pressure airline margins. FOMC minutes drop Wednesday. GDP final and PCE land Thursday. Jerome Powell said at Harvard last week he doesn’t believe the Iran conflict will have lasting economic impact, but traders remember he also called inflation “transient” before the Fed was forced into aggressive hikes.
In this episode of Monday Morning Must Knows, Merlin Rothfeld breaks down current market conditions, key earnings reports, and the major economic events traders should be watching this week.
