Celebrating Moms in Business & Finance

What is your background, and how did you get into blogging about finance?

I have always wanted to own my own business, even as a child. I would endlessly brainstorm different business ideas and attempt to implement them for as long as I can remember. While I don’t have a traditional background in finance, I’ve learned so much from all of my financial mistakes I’ve made over the years. You don’t need a degree to understand and implement the basic aspects of personal finance, just a desire and perseverance.

Did your blog take off immediately, or did it take a while? If it took a while, how did you push through the slow times?

Honestly, I still don’t think my blog has taken off yet. There have been great times and successes, but I always feel like I’m missing something to take things to the next level. I’ve taken sabbaticals left and right, but I keep coming back and trying my best. I started out with one blog and over the years I’ve ended up owning six blogs. You really need to be invested and focus on why you started in the first place.

As a blogger, what does a typical day look like for you?

When actively blogging, I usually spend about 8 or so hours a day just keeping things going. Coming up with ideas and outlines for content, updating plug-ins, replying to comments, organizing and updating previous content, networking with other bloggers, social media, leaving comments on other blogs and all the other behind the scenes work that nobody really sees. It’s not as simple as writing a post and replying to comments, there is so much more to it.

Do you have any secrets for balancing being a mom with building a successful blog?

Take advantage or quiet time (sleep, school, etc.) to get things done and don’t get too busy to spend time with your family. As a blogger, you’re already taking work home with you, so don’t let it become everything.

What advice would you give to a busy mom who is interested in starting up and growing a website?

Start small, like posting once a week while you get the hang of things. Also, slowly integrate all of the various other tasks associated with blogging. Once you get into a schedule, it will become much easier to increase your posting frequency without being so overwhelming.

What keeps you motivated?

Emails from readers that I have helped over the years. I save them all and read them from time to time to remember why I started blogging in the first place. It’s not about money, it about helping other people see that they can improve their financial situations---even when it seems impossible. As long as I remember that, I can keep going.

Can you share a little about your family with us?

I am very blessed to have such a wonderful family. My husband is truly my best friend, we are a perfect match. He is supportive of everything I do, not matter how many times I fail. We’ve never had a fight once, even after all of these years. It’s all about communication. We have an 11 year old daughter who loves school, reading, saving money, coupons, Legos. Overall, she’s a really great kid who always tries to do the right thing. Last but not least, we have an adorable Pekinese-Pomerian mix dog who is just the sweetest thing. Life is good.
